“Eating disorders are becoming more prevalent among middle-aged people and the elderly. The number of patients of eating disorders over the age of 40 increased by 36 percent from 4,419 in 2008 to 6,010 in 2012, according to data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service.
This growth rate is twice more than the 19.4-percent increase among those in their 20s or 30s, although younger people are traditionally more prone to eating disorders.
The proportion of those over 40 out of all eating disorder patients also went up from 40.4 percent in 2008 to 46.2 percent in 2012.
Eating disorders are common among youngsters and those in their 20s, often linked to excessive dieting and distorted views of beauty. Among middle-aged or elderly patients, the causes are often psychological.
Prof. Kim Youl-ri at Inje University Seoul Paik Hospital said, “Food is one of the most common things around us, and middle-aged or elderly patients often seek to solve psychological problems through food.” To read the entire article click here.
